Due to the current economic, political, and social upheavals, the construction industry is known to face enormous challenges. Given their significance, one would expect the associated issues to be on everyone’s mind. In reality, however, the opposite is true: Large segments of society are plagued by ignorance, lack of understanding, or, in the worst cases, outright disregard. As a result, large-scale construction continues, land and resources are wasted, and good architecture remains a niche phenomenon.
To counteract this, numerous communication specialists are engaged in many different forms and formats. Despite many successes, their reach is still insufficient compared to the societal relevance. The question therefore arises as to how a wider public can be sensitized to the current issues in the construction sector.
The “Building Culture Meeting,” a new format from the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, seeks possible answers. At the inaugural event—a joint project of the Architecture Gallery Berlin and the Federal Foundation for Building Culture—stakeholders from various fields will present their goals, programs, and open issues, and develop potential joint strategies. The event is designed as an informal “sidewalk salon” to engage in conversation with non-experts, passersby, and others.
