Welcome: Ulrich Müller

Introduction: Volkwin Marg, Stephan Schütz

With REBUILDING. Nonstop Transformation, gmp has been presenting the office’s conversion practice using concrete case studies since last year. In October 2024, the traveling exhibition will now be on display at the Architektur Galerie Berlin.

The beginnings of a discussion on the topic at gmp go back far longer than the current public debates on the conversion: just a few years after the completion of Berlin-Tegel Airport in the mid-1970s, the first conversions were carried out in Hamburg. To date, the office has over eighty conversion projects worldwide, around a quarter of which are currently in planning or construction.

The concept for each exhibition location on this tour is as individual and dynamic as each conversion project. Two of the projects presented at the opening exhibition in Venice in 2023, still in the construction process, have now been completed: The Alster swimming pool was the focus of the Hamburg exhibition in March 2024 and in Berlin, where gmp has carried out and is planning the most conversions after Hamburg, the recently renovated and converted Hyparschale Magdeburg by Ulrich Müther will be presented for the first time. Together with the Dresden Kulturpalast and the Pressehaus on Alexanderplatz, the exhibition shows three examples of successful conversions and the preservation of buildings from the Eastern Modernism period.
