Welcome: Ulrich Müller

Where are we headed? Under this ambiguous heading, firm founder Tobias Wulf writes in the foreword to the monograph *Structure and Type*: “After more than 30 years of design practice in the firm and in teaching, we are increasingly seeking universally applicable answers to the challenging problems of our time.” For while building uses change over time—and will do so with even greater frequency in the future—the developed building typologies should be as robust and durable as possible. Buildings that can be easily adapted to the needs of the times endure and are thus ultimately particularly sustainable. His conclusion is: “The use must have the opportunity to adapt to the building—not the other way around. As architects, we are responsible for the spaces involved. Only strong spaces that are harmonious in terms of architectural culture and atmosphere can endure.” Form, space, and construction as a triad are also inseparably linked in contemporary architectural discourse.

Structure and Type is the update to the 2014 monograph Rhythm and Melody. Among the 17 projects presented therein, which have since been completed or are currently under construction, are the cafeteria and media library (Darmstadt, 2021), the Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene (Berlin, under construction), and the recently completed Museum Historische Oberamteistraße (Reutlingen, 2025). The projects are complemented by a selection of competition entries that illustrate the theme particularly well.
